It’s a Clown!
posted by Chris Froat | November 10, 2016 | In News, UncategorizedAs if people didn’t fear clowns enough, earlier this month police were getting strange phone calls regarding clowns trying to lure kids into the woods. It started this summer in Greenville, SC, but has spread to many states, including North Carolina, and also has happened internationally in the United Kingdom and Australia.
So far, police have not been able to verify these strange sightings. Most sightings appear to be hoaxes, while others have been connected to actual crime. On October 29, a San Diego man was stabbed in his home by what he claims were four men dressed as clowns, according to the Los Angeles Times.
But the ramifications have been very real. Target superstores did not sell clown costumes this year, according to CNN. Some Florida residents armed themselves as protection against clowns this Halloween, according to CBS News. And in Dayton, Ohio, a woman fired a warning shot in a clown mask, according to WDTN news. So far there have been no actual clowns shot.
Police say that, most likely, the bulk of these claims are fake or else some weird prank to possibly stir up awareness for the 2017 rerelease of Stephen King’s “It.”
A police representative told the Winston-Salem Journal that they actually advised no one to wear a clown costume in public.
