Diversity Triumphs in Sports: The Case of the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team in 2016.
Things are changing a lot and in some cases for the better. Fortunately, all this change and the progress that has taken place in recent years has been good and has helped in the discovery of new ideas. One of the changes that the United States has most recently achieved is diversity in sports. Not only do we find more diversity in sports such as football, baseball, basketball, swimming, etc., but also in gymnastics, for men and women. Although there have been no limits, other than limits on body measurements and athletic abilities, there has rarely been any ethnic diversity in gymnastics. That is until now, and with the help of the United States women’s gymnastics team in 2016; and, many people have been inspired to achieve what they have always dreamed of achieving.
The US women’s gymnastics team last year was a great symbol of the country’s progress regarding diversity. The team consists of five women, Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez, Aly Raisman, and Madison Kocián. All women who not only show great skill during their competitions, but are also influential figures because they all have different ethnic heritages. Aly Raisman is Jewish, Madison Kocian is American, Laurie Hernandez is Puerto Rican, Simone Biles is African American and Belizean, and Gabby Douglas is African American. In recent years, most sports have been dominated by white athletes, there was very little variety. Fortunately, now, we see people of different traditions and ethnicities in the world of sports.
This group of women working together symbolize unity and equality in sports, which is expected to soon spread to other areas such as politics, entertainment, news, etc.
Although this was the women’s gymnastics team in 2016, it is still very relevant because the members of this team have achieved things that no one else has been able to do, especially for their ages. To begin with, not only is Laurie Hernandez the youngest member to travel to Rio to participate in the Olympic Games, but she is also the first Latina born in the US to compete in the Olympics since Tracee Talavera in 1984. Although Gabby Douglas and Simone Biles are not the first African Americans to have represented the US, they have achieved much in a short time. In 2012, Douglas was the first person of color, of any nationality, to win gold medals for the team in the Olympic games. And, she continues to win gold medals in gymnastics competitions. On the other hand, we have Simone Biles who managed to be the first African American to be the all-around world champion, not one, but three times since 2013. “They are making history and demonstrating that there really are no racial boundaries from the point of view of participation in our sport, “said US Gymnastics President Steve Penny.
The United States Women’s Gymnastics Team in 2016 is a great example of racial diversity in sports, while being an inspiration to all people by showing that the color of their skin does not limit what they can achieve. This team is very important, not only in the world of sports, but also the world in general because it signifies that each person can do what s/he wants to if they believe so. However, the most important effect of this team is that it encourages others to do what they dream of without letting anything or anyone stop them.
