Broncos Reload on Talent, But Will It Be Enough?
posted by Jamal Battle | October 13, 2017 | In SportsCoach Spencer’s first year last year was a success in spurts, especially down the stretch. With a 13-16 overall record (7-10 record in conference), below .500 record, he lead his experienced team all the way to the CIAA Championship. Losing in the championship was a disappointment, but whoever would’ve thought they’d make it that far?
With that success, there should be something to take over this season. With the departure of stars Joshua Dawson and Michael Tyson 9.1, and 4 other key players, the question now becomes: will the Broncos be able to rebound from their CIAA Championship lost?
The short answer is: maybe.
The long answer is: if the new pieces that will develop chemistry and their individual skills, the Broncos can win it all this year.
On bright side, the Broncos return two starters in Joshua Bryant (11.9 points-per-game, 50% from the field) and Will Tibbs (4.3 points-per-game). I expect both to improve this year, especially Bryant. This is his team now, which means he will have the ball in his hands more. He will have to show that he has a balance between scoring and getting teammates involved. His impact and usage rate will be high.
Tibbs will have more of an offensive impact because the ball won’t have to go through Tyson, Dawson, and Bryant before it gets to him. Tibbs will have to develop a better stroke from the mid-range, free throw, and 3-point range to evolve more as a player. He has a good drive-game and his 6’7” frame isn’t a hindrance either.
The Broncos bring in a huge group of new talent, headlined by 6’3” guard Jeremiah Pope. You’ll also see contributions from the last year’s redshirts 6’3” Ty McClain, 6’6” Jordan Brown, 6’2” Greg Joyner, and 6’9” Adrian Norwood.
Expect to see some flashes from McClain. His play will be needed due to the lack of lead guards the Broncos have. He can slash to the basket really well for his size. He just needs to become a little bit passive and get others involved.
Norwood’s play will be very pivotal for the Broncos’ chances of getting back to the championship and winning. His 6’9”-size helps with the length of this team since there are more guards than forwards this season. The question is: can he do enough on the boards and finishing at the basket to win games?
There are intriguing players up and down the roster. But there’s a lot of questions. The Broncos could finish anywhere in the standings. Will they have another Cinderella tournament this year? Will the potential blossom into dominance for a couple of years? We’ll find out. And that’s what makes this season one of the most exciting ones we’ve seen in a little while.
