Basketball Season is Here!
posted by Amber Gladden | November 29, 2017 | In SportsLady Broncos Basketball won their first home game on Nov. 14 against Catawba College, but fell to Coker College, 56-51, on Nov. 18, while the men’s basketball team won their first home game on Nov. 18 against Wingate University, 65-55.
The Lady Broncos pulled out a big win against Catawba on Wednesday winning 69-46. They struggled at the beginning of the game with players getting into foul trouble.
They eventually gained a big lead in the game where it was too late for Catawba College to catch back up. The stands were also packed with Bronco fans.
This year the Lady Broncos basketball team consist of five freshmen, two sophomores, four juniors, and three seniors. The men’s basketball team consist of eight freshmen, three sophomores, two juniors, and two seniors.
The women’s team is coached by head coach Serena King-Coleman and this will be her second year coaching here at Fayetteville State University. Her assistant coaches are Tyreece Brown, Alonzo Lunsford, and Shuanda Ashford.
The men’s team will be coached by head coach Ken Spencer and this will also be his second year coaching at FSU. His assistant coaches are DeShawn McCain, Raymond Broughton, and Jarmel Baxter.
Both teams started preseason back in August, conditioning and preparing for this year’s season every morning at 5:00 a.m.
On top of preparing for their regular season, the players had to juggle study hall, community service, class, homework, and maintain a certain GPA.
When senior player Jamesha Mosley was asked how she felt about this year’s women’s basketball season she stated, “This could be a big season for us when we learn how to put four quarters together and play to our full potential.”
The women team has 14 home games this season, and the men have 12 home games. The next men’s and women’s home game is Nov. 30 against Morris College.
Both teams plan to go all the way this year and the players would like to call this season “ring season!”
