posted by Ja'Shawn Steward-Johnson | October 13, 2017 | In SportsAs the Fayetteville State University women’s volleyball team enters its final stretch of the season, we take a look back on the season the Broncos have had so far. Through 22 games, Fayetteville State is 15-7 with a 10-2 conference record, which is good for third in their division and fourth in their conference.
Sporting a 6-6 record after losing to non-conference opponent St. Andrews, the Broncos began their incredible nine-game win streak. The streak began with a sweep at Livingstone and saw the Broncos defeat UNC Pembroke, Virginia Union, Lincoln (PA), Chowan, St. Augustine, Claflin, Shaw, and Johnson C. Smith before losing a hard-fought home game against Winston Salem State, 3-1 (17-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-23). The Broncos surrendered only had two sets and had seven sweeps before the Winston Salem State match.
The Broncos opened up their season with a non-conference sweep against Benedict in South Carolina. During the USC Aiken volleyball tournament, the Broncos were uneven and dropped four non-conference games in Aiken, South Carolina, winning only 3 sets combined. The Broncos original home opener against Claflin was postponed due to concerns about Hurricane Irma at the time. In the CIAA Roundup I, the Broncos began conference play by defeating Elizabeth City State, Bowie State, and Virginia State (winning a combined 9 sets to 2) in Bowie, Maryland. By the time the Broncos played their first home game against Mount Olive, Fayetteville State’s record was 5-4.
Fayetteville State has eight more regular-season matches (and four more home games) left before the CIAA Tournament. The Broncos remaining home games are on Oct. 30th against St. Augustine’s, Oct. 31st against Lees-McRae and Nov. 8th and Nov. 9th showdowns against Benedict, and Johnson C. Smith, respectively. The CIAA tournament begins Nov. 17th and will be in Petersburg, Virginia this year.
