Cheer Phi Smoov Celebrates Black History Month
posted by Nicole Hodges | February 24, 2017 | In Arts and Culture, NewsFebruary is the month to recognize Black History, and Cheer Phi Smoov did just that.
On February 8th, the cheerleaders wore blue and white African dashikis all day long in preparation for the basketball game later that evening. The girls performed in their African apparel and still rocked the house as if they were in their usual attire.
The basketball game was specifically set aside as “Black History Night.”
During a timeout for the boy’s game, Cheer Phi marched to the center of the court with their fists raised high to the song “Glory” by rapper Common and singer John Legend. Once the girls reached the center, they stood still, fists still clenched, as the words rang out: “One day, when the glory comes, it will be ours.”
The tributes did not stop there, though. During halftime, Cheer Phi held a Black History trivia game. Bria Perkins acted as the teacher, and the cheerleaders sat on the court raising their hands and answering questions as if they were in a classroom.
The basketball game was not only filled with cheers when players scored, but it was a night of remembering those who paved the way for us.
