The Saccorhytus: The Ancestor of Human Beings?
Recently, British and Chinese researchers discovered a creature that may be the ancestor of the human being. The creature’s microfossils were found in Shaanxi Province, China. Scientists found about 45 microfossils in central China. According to La Jornada, the creature is called Saccorhytus because “its characteristics are similar to those of a sack” (1). Saccorhytus is very small, specifically microscopic, and is a marine creature that is 540 million years old. This animal is about one millimeter in size and its features include a large mouth, microscopic size, and a sack-shaped body. Scientists learned that the body of the Saccorhytus is “bilaterally symmetrical” according to La Jornada (2). The Saccorhytus lived in the shallow water sediment. According to El Espectador, the Saccorhytus is “the most primitive example of the deuterostomes, a broad biological category encompassing, among other subgroups, vertebrates” (2). The origin of the name “deuterostome” is from Greek: the meaning is “second mouth.”
The researchers that are investigating the creature are from the University of Cambridge in England and the Northwestern University in Xi’an, China. Simon Conway Morris is from England and Dejan Shu and Jian Han are from Xi’an, China. Simon Conway Morris is a paleontologist and is a member of the Saint John College of the University of Cambridge. Dejan Shu and Jian Han are specialists in fossils of prehistoric animals. The three people have an important role in the study of Saccorhytus. They discovered that there is no evidence that the Saccorhytus has a rectum, so the creature evacuates through its mouth. Since the fossils were damaged, the researchers found no evidence of a nose or eyes. Simon Conway Morris said: “We think that as an early deuterostome this may represent the beginning of a very diverse range of species, including ourselves” (La Jornada 2). The researchers studied the Saccorhytus and compared it to other deuterostome varieties. According to La Jornada, “most of the other early deuterostomes are about 510 to 520 million years old” (2). Researchers are using an electronic microscope and computed tomography to study the Saccorhytus. They need to use this equipment because they are trying to look for similar or different characteristics between other varieties of deuterostomes and the Saccorhytus. According to The New York Times, the Saccorhytus is the largest of the deuterostomes and the ancestor of other animals in different groups including humans. Scientists explained that Saccorhytus is “quite primitive” and the creature is related to humans (20 Minutes 1). Although there may be creatures that are older than the Saccorhytus, these creatures have no relation to humans. Also, researchers believe that Saccorhytus is a phase of human evolution. This discovery is important because scientists can study a new creature and possibly learn if the Saccorhytus is the ancestor of the human being.
