Fayetteville State Introduces The Bronco Food Pantry In Partnership With Food Lion
posted by Keyona Smith | March 28, 2019 | In NewsFayetteville State University has made a commitment to conquer student hunger by teaming up with Food Lion to open a food pantry on campus available to enrolled students. The food pantry opened February 19 and is located on the first floor of Barber Administration Building.
In a collaborative effort to get the pantry started, Food Lion provided $10,000 in pantry products, shelving, and operational laptops. The pantry operates within the hours of 12:00-4:30 p.m., Wednesday through Friday.
Student body president, Karee Brown-Jones added that the pantry is for all students, both residing on and off campus.
“Food insecurity can affect any student including the students that don’t look or typically fit the description of a hungry person,” said President Brown-Jones. “An advantage that we have is, we are the only campus food pantry to have non-perishable items and freshly refrigerated items as well.”
Brown-Jones also explained the importance of such an initiative on our campus as one to solve food insecurity. “It is unthinkable that any student should go hungry, with the creation of the food pantry a student will no longer worry about his or her next meal. As SGA President, I can truly and humbly say that a difference has been made in the lives of the students, and I would like to thank Mr. Wesley Fountain for helping in the process of creating a partnership with Food Lion.”
Dzyare Chisholm, a senior communication major, has been able to use the pantry since its opening. She said she was provided a reusable grocery bag to carry items she picked from the pantry.
“They also had a variety of vegetables and fresh fruit that we could pick from. I chose fresh apples, ramen noodles, soup and breakfast bars,” said Chisholm. She added that they ask for you to complete a survey that does not take longer than five minutes. “You are allotted ten items to pick and may return back to the pantry after two weeks for more items,” Chisholm said.
Criminal justice major and senior Antavious Steed said that is was very welcoming.
“It was set up just like a grocery store, they asked what we were looking for and they gifted us a free reusable bag,” Steed said.
He received cereal bars, peanut butter, jelly, and noodles. Steed added that steps to use the pantry include registering for first time use where you provide your name, date, the dorm you reside in, and your banner number. After you shop, they ask you to fill out a survey that includes questions about what you received, the quantity, and your name.
This initiative is a great start towards combating the fact that the campus exists in the middle of a food desert. Fayetteville State is making great strides for their campus and community by living by their motto: res non verba, deeds not words.
