Interview: DJ Envy Talks with FSU Student
posted by Keyona Smith | October 13, 2017 | In Arts and CultureJayda Hazley, Hazley DaIntern, recently caught up with DJ Envy, Raashaun Casey, host one of three for the radio show Breakfast Club in the morning at Sports USA on her YouTube channel. They discussed how it is being an entrepreneur, advice to students and specifically communication majors, and his future projects.
DJ Envy is also a HBCU grad, graduating from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia.
“Hampton was great. … I’m the first person in my family to go to college, … and ya’ know my parents wanted me to go to a HBCU. So the choices were Morehouse, Hampton, Morgan and Howard,” Envy said.
After traveling to each college and seeing the whole “home by the sea” and the lake, how beautiful it looked, Envy decided Hampton was where he wanted to be.
Envy earned a B.S. in business management and marketing at Hampton University.
Before college, he began DJ-ing at fifteen as just something he enjoyed doing, but after graduating, he decided to give music a serious try for a year. He mentioned that if, for some reason, it wouldn’t have worked out, he would have gone to Wall Street.
Envy still uses his degree by co-owning with co-host Angela Yee “Juice for Life” juice bar. He also owns real estate properties spreading from Detroit and New Jersey and a soda company called “Top Pop”.
Envy noted that technology has changed DJ-ing since his start: “I think the most important thing that’s changed is, we have [DJ-ing software] Serato. We DJ off laptops now. Before I would have carry crates [of music]. … As far as the music, music just transcends, but good music is good music.”
Advice that DJ Envy would give to all students, and communication majors alike, would be to “use the internet and intern.”
Look out for DJ Envy’s new album, “Just a Kid from Queens,” set to come out next year 2018. And stay tuned to his podcast “The Casey Crew,” where he talks the beauty of relationships, give couple advice and talks to celebrity couples with his wife Gia Casey.
