The Wall Is a Reality. The order that will change everything.
On Wednesday, January 25, 2017, President Donald Trump signed the order for the construction of the wall between Mexico and the United States. Many Americans are worried about the cost of the wall because President Enrique Peña Nieto confirmed that Mexico will not pay it.
According to the British Broadcasting Company, the border between Mexico and the United States is 3,100 kilometers long, but President Trump plans to build a 1,600 kilometer wall and natural barriers will create the rest. BBC also reports that, according to Trump, the wall will cost between 10 billion and 12 billion dollars, but in reality the wall will cost between 12 billion and 15 billion dollars. Although Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto confirmed that Mexico will not pay for the wall, Trump insists the wall will help the neighboring country and they pay for it. Many Americans are concerned that their taxes will increase to pay for the wall.
The construction of the wall may have additional repercussions. According to BBC World, there are four major affected areas: migration, security, the environment, and the economy. Many people risk their lives every day to come to the United States, once the wall is built crossing will be more dangerous than before. Also, according to the Vanguard, Trump denied federal funds to “sanctuary cities” that protect undocumented immigrants. The wall will require new agents and more detention centers.
There is a belief that the wall will help with the problem of illegal drugs, but according to BBC Mundo the wall will not change anything. People who traffic illegal drugs have many methods to do this, and the wall will only make it more expensive.
The environment will undergo significant changes as well. According to BBC Mundo, in 2011, the Mexican city of Nogales was flooded because the drainage was blocked by a border wall. On the other hand, many species will be threatened because their migration will be interrupted.
President Trump plans to cancel visas and raise border fees, which will hurt the economy, as more than one million people work, study, visit, and trade at the border, according to BBC World.
Trump had planned to talk to President Nieto about the North American Free Trade Agreement, but Nieto decided to cancel the meeting because of tensions over the construction of the wall
