Let the Madness Begin
posted by Daniel Martin | February 25, 2017 | In SportsThe Super Bowl just ended in a game for the ages, with a record-breaking come from behind victory in the first ever Super Bowl overtime.
But the question is: What do we do now with football season over?
Have no fear, sports fans, March Madness is approaching fast.
College basketball is nearing the end of its season and embarking on the next chapter of upsets and Cinderellas. As of now, teams are positioning themselves and getting ready for conference tournaments.
In North Carolina, that means Atlantic Coast Conference. With North Carolina and Duke poised to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament, what team is going to be standing tall as national champions?
This tournament is great for even the average fan, the office pools and such that people have when picking their brackets. When the field is announced on Selection Sunday, you will see the people looking for the next big upset. Which team will be the next Lehigh or Mercer which both of which upset Duke in previous years? What team looks to be the next Butler, making an improbable run to the title game? Let’s not forget Kentucky, UCLA, Kansas, and a host of others looking to be the last team standing. Will we see a new champion crowned or will Villanova become the first team to win back-to-back championships since Florida?
That’s what makes this tournament great. Any team that makes the field has a legitimate chance to make it in the final. It’s not like college football, where you know Villanova won’t be playing Alabama or any other powerhouse in the championship game. The probability of an underdog victory is what makes the tournament special.
Let’s not forget the women’s bracket. UConn looks poised to bring home another title. As of the February 14, they have won 100 straight games. They are on the verge of winning their fifth straight championship, and you want to keep tabs to see if a team upsets them or they run the table. Of the teams they have beaten this season so far, four were in the top ten, and ten total have been ranked in the top 25.
Either way, history is going to be made in the coming months. It’s time to see which team is going to be the next big story. Who is going to take the next big step and which teams will the clock strike midnight on? Bring on March Madness!
