Refugees in NC
posted by Hanine Mohamed, News Editor | November 10, 2016 | In NewsIn North Carolina, we have refugees from many different countries. We currently have around 470 Syrian refugees and Burmese refugees. It is an 18 month process to be labeled as a refugee and, sometimes, the process can take longer with larger families.
Chapel Hill is primarily known for having the largest amount of Burmese refugees in NC. The Burmese refugees come through an organization called Refugee Community Partnership and the majority of the Syrian refugees come through nonprofit organizations such as Church World Service and World Relief of High Point. Many of the Syrian refugees are located in Charlotte (which has nine families), Greensboro, Durham, Raleigh and Greenville.
Jessica Mencia is a sophomore at UNC-CH who works with Refugee Community Partnership located in Carrboro. This organization primarily works with Burmese refugees and each volunteer normally has one family to help; two volunteers will help with two families. They help the refugees with many issues, focusing on keeping the families in the best conditions possible.
