The FSU Broncos won their season opener against Chowan 24-21. The narrow win was FSU’s first season opening win in nearly a decade, their last victory coming in 2008. Running backs Donshell Jetton and Stevie Green, the 2016 CIAA Offensive Rookie of the Year, led the way to victory with 70 and 90 rushing yards, respectively.
The next week, the Broncos lost their home opener against Wingate, losing 31-21. Freshman defensive back Elvin De La Rosa had his first collegiate interception returned for a touchdown. FSU was up 14-0 at that point until Wingate scored 17 consecutive points. The final score was 31-21 after Wingate scored their final touchdown with less than seven minutes to go in the final quarter.
The Broncos lost the 20th Annual Down East Viking Classic against Elizabeth City State, 45-42. FSU was up 28-19 at halftime before being outscored 26-14 in the second half by ECSU. Despite the loss, Stevie Green won Most Valuable Player honors with 250 yards rushing on 23 carries. FSU’s Brandon Smith returned a kickoff 90 yards to tie the game at 42-42 before ECSU kicked the go-ahead and ultimately, game-winning field goal with less than three minutes.
Before the season started, FSU was predicted to finish second behind Winston Salem State in the CIAA South division and fifth overall in the CIAA conference, as voted on by CIAA Coaches’ Association. Kicker David Lamb, punter Matthew Trau and defensive linemen Darius Darden were the three players named to the 2017 Pre-season All-CIAA Team.
