The Women’s Cross Country Champs!

Inez Turner joined the cross-country team as the head coach in July 2017. Along with her expertise and fierce work ethic, Inez Turner brings along a desire to dominate her CIAA competition.
During her first season as head coach at Fayetteville State University, she has successfully demonstrated that the women’s cross-country athletic program can seriously compete with rival programs from NCAA Division I schools. Mediocrity is not an option for any team that is lead by Inez Turner. Coach Turner is poised to make a strong impact here at Fayetteville State University.
Although Inez Turner had a relatively short window of opportunity to actively engage in the athletic recruitment process on behalf of Fayetteville State University. She has attracted the interest of several athletes, including freshman runner, Destiny Stevons. In addition, there are still many very talented athletes who are eager to work under the athletic direction of Coach Turner. The women’s cross-country team ready to make a bold statement next season. With strong performances from freshmen, such as Aleena Cruz, Carisha Leonard, and Destiny Stevons, there are many indicators that the team will exponentially increase their competitive strength next season. Both Leonard and Stevons earned spots on the All-CIAA team, and Cruz was named the Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year.
The athletes on the team share a bond not always seen amongst collegiate teams. The members of the team keep a positive attitude and treat one another as if they were family. Thorough preparation both mentally and physically, including 6 a.m. practices, long runs, ice baths, and the wisdom of their coaches, the athletes work together to excel. From watching and speaking with the team’s coach and players, it is evident the team has what it takes to continue to win. Even though there are members of the team who finish ahead of the others, they make it a point to remain humble and encourage the other members of the team to give it their all.
The future is very bright for the women’s cross-country athletic program at Fayetteville State University. Don’t think this year’s championship success is the last you will hear about the Women’s Cross Country team! Keep an eye on this very talented team of champions.
