Bronco Whole Mind Spa
posted by Center for Personal Development | March 28, 2019 | In Arts and Culture, NewsIn the Spaulding Building, students can find the FSU Center for Personal Development (CFPD). The Center for Personal Development, our campus counseling center, offers individual, couples, group, and substance abuse counseling. Additionally, they provide workshops, presentations, and assistance with accommodations for various student disabilities and learning differences. With a new year came new ideas for ways that the counseling staff would be able to support FSU students. Along with their new motto, “Taking care of you…Bronco Whole,” the CFPD staff just launched the Bronco Whole Mind Spa. This relaxation room engages the senses as it is equipped with wall art, fireplace, miniature water fountains, sand gardens, blue lights, sound machine, scented diffuser, and three massage chairs. The Center takes pride in assisting students with their educational journeys by offering private, confidential and free services by licensed professional counselors and their long-time administrative assistant. They state that “no problem is too big or too small to talk over with a counselor.”
The decision for a Bronco Whole Mind Spa was made at a CFPD staff meeting in 2018 where the CFPD team came to a consensus that this would be an innovative and therapeutic way to support students by providing an alternative to face-to-face counseling. The Spa came to fruition by renovating the CFPD staff break room. Through collaboration with a campus partner, the CFPD received funding from our FSU Title IX program, led by former coordinator, Attorney Patricia Bradley.
“We no longer have a break room because we wanted to offer a new feature to our students. The response has been well worth the sacrifice” said Dr. Latonya Graham. “Any opportunities to aid our students in feeling stronger, more confident, and independent are paramount to us” said Dr. Graham.
Thanks to FSU alumna and graphic designer, Jasmine Caldwell, there are matching murals on the door and wall of the spa to further create a sense of serenity. By way of the expertise of Bronco Printing Solutions, the CFPD received seamless installation of both the door and wall murals by Diana Richardson, Byron Riddick, Shaun Savarese, and Gary Warren. The transformation of the room began with new paint led by Johnny Quinerly, as well as assembly and installation of furniture and other items led by Doronado Koonce. Without these foundational updates, the CFPD staff report that the spa would not be a reality.
“There is a lot of stress and anxiety associated with being in college. We wanted to create a space where students can decompress and implement relaxation techniques learned in their counseling sessions” said Dr. Graham. The Bronco Whole Mind Spa is a talk-free zone and there are no phones, food, or drinks allowed. It is open to all currently enrolled FSU students, not just the ones receiving services from the center.
In order to make an appointment for a session at the Bronco Whole Mind Spa, you can call Ms. Victoria Ratliff at (910) 672-1222. You can schedule up to one hour during the hours of 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
