Honoring Those Who Serve

The Student Veteran’s Center hosted a two-day celebration, Nov. 6 – 8, in honor of the university’s military affiliated students. The students were invited to Bronco Square, Suite 102 to enjoy music and refreshments while celebrating Veteran’s Day.

Veteran’s Day is observed annually to honor and express gratitude of all living Americans who were called to military service and have served honorably.  Originally referred to as Armistice Day, this holiday was established to honor Americans who had served in World War I. It falls on November 11; the day when war ended in 1918. From November 6-8 the Student Veteran Center hosted a two-day celebration in honor of the university’s military affiliated students. The students were invited to Bronco Square Suite 102 and were welcomed with music and refreshments.

On November 9th, thousands lined along the streets of downtown Fayetteville for the 2013 Veteran’s Day Parade; the biggest event of the city’s annual “Heroes Homecoming” celebration. According to WRAL.com (forgot the proper way to cite websites in a report; thought they were supposed to be capitalized), more than 100 units of joint military branches participated in the parade including veterans’ organizations, local bands, high school and university ROTC programs, and representatives from Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base. The colors red, white, and blue stood strong (objects don’t assume human capabilities) above everyone’s’ head as the different troops walked through the parade. Not only was this a time to appreciate those who have sacrificed their lives for the citizens of our country but also to remember those who lost their lives doing so as well. On November 12 at 6 pm, the Virtual Justice Project(formerly known as TALIAS) hosted a program at Fayetteville State University in the upper level of the Cook Building, called “Veterans- Do You Know Your Rights? Free Legal Advice.” The program was an information session that provided military widows, spouses, and children information about possible Veteran Affairs benefits that they could receive. The program incorporated High-Definition videoconferencing to link broadcast participants at North Carolina A&T State University, Elizabeth City State University, and North Carolina Central University.

What does each branch do?

1. The Air Force branch is responsible for most military operation in the air and space

2. The Army branch is responsible for military land operation

3. Marines are soldiers who serve at sea and in special missions on land and in air

4. The Navy branch maintains command at sea

5. The Coast Guard branch serves as the chief agency for protecting life and property at sea and enforcing United States maritime laws

Also, congratulations Fellow Broncos: “The Military Times has named Fayetteville State University (FSU) as the top school in North Carolina and among the best in the country for veterans.  The organization comprising Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times placed a new emphasis on academic rigor this year when conducting and scoring the fourth annual Best for Vets: Colleges survey, a highly respected 150-question analysis of a school’s complete offerings for veterans”.
