With wind speeds of up to 185 miles per hour, on September 1, the eye of the hurricane made landfall in the Abaco Islands. People were encouraged to leave the islands for their own safety. Those who could leave fled the islands but those who were not so lucky were invited to stay in hotels in an effort to keep them on higher ground and away from windows.
