Senior Highlight: Amariche Hawkins
posted by Cassandra Carter | March 29, 2016 | In Arts and CultureHailing from Los Angeles, CA and residing in Fayetteville since 2006, Amariche Hawkins is a senior majoring in Mass Communications. As a non-traditional student, Amariche was drawn to FSU because of the opportunity to be a part of the radio program. He was Program Director at the radio station from spring 2014- spring 2015 and felt that a part of FSU is gone with the sale of the station. He did his internship at the Fayetteville Corporate Communication Office.
Last semester, while he was taking Health Communication, he started the health campaign My Body Our Health which promotes HIV and STD testing for students. According the CDC, African Americans accounted for 44% of new HIV infections in 2010. The campaign helps students find where they can get tested on and off campus. My Body Our Health is active on FB and uses social media to connect to students.
Currently, Amariche has started a podcast called The Schizophrenic Christian which he fully produces. He chose that name specifically to bring to light the stigma of mental illness and to talk about issues that Christians face. He has produced 4 episodes which can be found on Facebook and Soundcloud. He also writes in the student blog for the Fayetteville Observer.
After graduation, he plans on working in public relations and plans on working on other shows under the label of 30parkwood.com.
