24-hour food on campus
posted by Kenyan Hodnett | October 23, 2023 | In OpinionFayetteville State University has a variety of food options around campus. There are places like the cafeteria, Chick-fil-A, the Bronco Grill, McAlister’s, and several other options across from the campus. However, many of these establishments close before 10:00 p.m.
There are restaurants less than 10 minutes away from campus that close later than 10:00 p.m., but for some students who may not have the transportation, these may cause an issue.
According to a study done by Mattress Advisor, sleep researchers have concluded that 35% of students are staying up until 3 a.m. at least one night a week. With this statistic, we can assume that while these students are staying up, they could get hungry while studying, doing homework, or simply just staying up out of boredom.
Students who may not have access to transportation past 10 pm when on-campus food sources are scarce, are left with a tough decision: Fend for themselves or go to bed hungry.
I feel as though having restaurants that stay open for 24 hours will increase student’s chances of satisfying their hunger and possibly participating in class more. Personally, when I stay up at night and can find a snack that satisfies me, I feel more empowered and comfortable participating in class the following day.
Having a 24-hour food option could also help to build community on campus. If students have an area where they can receive food at any time of night, it can build an environment to hang out and enjoy others’ company. Imagine, you and your friend are up late at night and both of you are hungry. You’re given the opportunity to get food and talk with each other, or socialize with others who might be in the area as well. This fosters the growth of community on FSU’s campus.
