Andrew Luck Shocks the World With Early Retirement
posted by Antonio Mitchell | September 18, 2019 | In SportsThe NFL retirement of Andrew Luck at age 29 and the way he went out surprised and shocked the world. Former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Luck felt it was time for him to retire due to all of the injuries he received.
Luck told ESPN: “I’ve been stuck in this process. I haven’t been able to live the life I want to live. Taken the joy out of the game, and after 2016, when I played in pain and was unable to practice, I made a vow to myself that I would not go down that path again.” Luck also explained the emotional toll it had on him saying, “I feel quite exhausted and quite tired. I hit the point where I felt like I knew what I needed to do.”
Luck said he can’t see the future, but he does not plan on coming back.
NFL players responded supportively and respectful of his decision.
New Orleans Saints wide receiver Dez Bryant said on Twitter: “I understand you 100 percent, brother. Take your time. I wish you the best.”
Luck’s teammate tight end Eric Ebron tweeted: “Luck is someone I’ll tell my kids about, the person and the player.”
Colts safety Kevin Byard responded to the news on Twitter, as well: “This is sad! Much respect to a great competitor and leader of a franchise. Good luck to you and your family on your retirement.”
Another one of Luck’s teammates wide receiver T.Y. Hilton responded on Twitter: “Every time I think about it, tears start to flow. No one understands you like I do. Our bond is one of a kind. I’ve decided to dedicate my season to my BEST FRIEND. I love you.”
Fan reaction at Lucas Oil Stadium on August 25, when the Colts lost to the Chicago Bears, was equally dramatic. The fans all booed him on his way back to the locker room.
Now that Andrew Luck has retired, we will see how the Colts and the NFL will be without the beloved player.
