Bring in the New Lines: Spring 2019 Probates
posted by Wil Brown | April 24, 2019 | In Arts and Culture, NewsOn the evening of April 12, the NPHC hosted the spring 2019 probate in the Capel Arena. Three organizations revealed their new members to the audience during the event: Zeta Phi Beta sorority, Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, and Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. As the crowd anxiously awaited, they sang along and danced to music played by Fayetteville State University freshman DJ Fudgee. The crowd was full of students, alumni, and family members.
Dressed in white dark-tinted sunglasses, white blouses and blue, fitted pants, the first organization to present its members was Zeta Phi Beta sorority. Nine young ladies came out in their line order, recited information about the organization, danced in unison to the organization’s songs and sang renditions to popular songs to the crowd’s amazement, all before revealing their identities and new aliases to everyone. The group included various members from various classes and majors, even several seniors who will be graduating in May.
Phi Beta Sigma fraternity was the next organization to present its new members. The group of six men appeared dressed in white and blue masks, black cargo pants, and black hoodies, and their line numbers spray painted in blue on the back. The group took part in several call and response chants, emulated each divine nine sorority, and danced in the unique leg-shaking, arm-swinging style, for which Sigmas are known. Then they revealed themselves, with new aliases and singing to the crowd.
The final organization to come out was Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. They appeared from the rear of the gym wearing white masks, fitted, burgundy pants, white dress shirts, black bulletproof style vest, and shiny black dress shoes. Unlike the other two organizations, the Kappas didn’t immediately come out to the center of the arena, instead they began to shimmy both individually and as a group before re-locking arms and proceeding to the center of the arena as they were cheered on by the crowd and large group of alumni Kappa standing beside them. Similarly to the other organizations, the Kappas recited information about the history of their organization, recited various chants and dances prior to revealing their identities and new aliases to everyone.
The night’s event concluded with many of the students, Greekaffiliated crowd members coming to the arena floor to reunite, dance together, congratulate the new members and, of course, take pictures. If you looked around the arena, it would be safe to say everyone enjoyed themselves and were glad they attended the event.
