Coming 2 America Again
posted by Marshae Kelly | September 18, 2019 | In Arts and CultureA sequel to the 1988 classic Coming to America has been announced. Coming 2 America will be in theaters December 18, 2020. Exciting, right?
Coming to America is one of the throwback classics of the African American community as well as others. This film was about a highly pampered prince from a fictional African country, Zamunda.
Most films at the time weren’t cast with African Americans, but Coming to America featured a majority Black cast.
In the film, Prince Akeem, played by Eddie Murphy, longed for nothing more than a beautiful wife who would love and adore him despite his great wealth. He was against arranged marriages, and once faced with it, he decided to flee to America, where he romances Lisa (Shar Headley). The original film was released 31 years ago and directed by John Landis. Several other well-known Black actors and actresses also were featured in the film, including Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, John Amos, Paul Bates and even Samuel L. Jackson.
According to film journalist Ethan Anderton, the sequel has been in the works for weeks, but Eddie Murphy and Wesley Snipes supposedly took a break from production for the world premiere of the their upcoming Netflix comedy Dolemite is My Name.
The plot of Coming 2 America follows former Prince Akeem, who is set to become king of Zamunda when he discovers that he has a son he never knew about in America, a street-savvy Queens’ native named Lavelle. Honoring his father’s dying wish to groom this son as the crowned prince, Akeem and Semmi set off to America.
When interviewed, Murphy was reluctant to give details on what to expect from the film.
Snipes, on the other hand, gave enough quotes at the Toronto Film Festival to form a full picture of his character in the film. According to movieweb.com, Snipes stated that he’s basically “playing the villain of the movie.” He also added: “He’s not really a bad guy. He’s just misunderstood.”
His character’s name is General Izzy, and he’s the general who lives next door to Akeem, according to Snipes.
Collider.com also reported that Murphy possibly is taking on several roles, as he did in the first film, which can be expected due to him showing how flexible and versatile he can be.
The film is being directed by Craig Brewer, known for 2005’s Hustle & Flow, and is expected to appear in theaters December 18, 2020.
