Fayetteville City Council Motions to Change Paid Parking
posted by Jacqueline Leibman | April 11, 2022 | In NewsAfter petitions from Downtown business owners, the Fayetteville City County voted 6-4 last Monday to motion to change the weekday paid parking times, according to the Fayetteville Observer.
Last July, the City Council agreed to initiate a paid parking plan on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for $1 per hour. Paid parking for special events—such as the Fayetteville Woodpeckers baseball games—would cost $5. The special event pricing would begin two hours before and end two hours after the event concludes.
The new vote lowered the paid parking hours to 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., which is in accordance with other major North Carolina cities.
The Fayetteville Observer states that Councilwoman Shakeyla Ingram originally asked to change “weekday paid parking to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; shorten the special events parking to one hour before a game and a half-hour after.”
Ingram stated that city residents asked her to request a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. timeframe, though 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. would “be comfortable,” as reported by the Fayetteville Observer.
Mayor Pro Tem Kathy Jensen rebutted the 6 p.m. cutoff, as “city staff members said that the hour of 6 to 7 p.m. brought in a “significant” amount of revenue.”
Additionally, it is expected to cost $8,000 to change the 200 parking signs located across the city. Instead of replacing the signs, Mayor Mitch Colvin has “encouraged” city staff members to find “an efficient and aesthetically pleasing” solution.
The official approval for changing the paid parking hours is already on the agenda for the next City Council meeting.
