Fayetteville State Traditions Cancelled in ‘the Interest of Public Health’
posted by DorMiya Vance | September 27, 2021 | In NewsFSU News put out the word that homecoming will not follow the traditions of having the much-anticipated Homecoming parade and pep rally. The announcement comes after SGA President Sydney Harris addressed the Homecoming concerns of many FSU students and staff.
According to the announcement, “Fayetteville State University (FSU) has made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s homecoming parade and pep rally that was to be held in conjunction with the City of Fayetteville.”
The “difficult decision” of canceling these Homecoming traditions came in “the interest of public health.” Those on campus “have done a tremendous job by getting vaccinated,” but “Cumberland County still has one of the highest COVID-19 rates in the state.”
To some, the parade and pep rally cancellation was in the best interest of FSU students and staff.
Kendrick Faison, ’02 FSU graduate, said the decision shows a debt to the community: “It’s Homecoming versus science, so all the decisions that should be made should be leveraged on science versus anything else. We want everything to be like normal, but we’re living in a new normal, so I think it’s very important that we strive for excellence.”
FSU News reassures that “FSU is doing its part to decrease those numbers on our campus and within our community.”
Though these traditions will not be a part of this year’s homecoming, other highly anticipated events are happening on campus, starting October 9, leading up to the Homecoming football game where the Broncos take on the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls.
