FSU Scholarship for Military Students
posted by Dominque Elliott | October 3, 2018 | In NewsA member of UNC board of governors, William Webb, is working with Fayetteville State University to establish a scholarship for students who have served in the military. According to an article on nccourts.gov, William Webb is a retired Magistrate Judge for the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of North Carolina. After he retired, Webb served on a number of boards and commissions, co-chair of the N.C. Commission on the Administration of Law and Justice, chair of the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission, and the UNC Board of Governors.
“As a former military veteran, retired Judge William Webb wanted to provide support to his fellow veterans who sought to obtain advanced degrees and credentials.” Chancellor Anderson commented when asked about the scholarship. “He decided to initiate a $25,000 endowed scholarship and name the scholarship after his childhood friend and colleague, Ronald B. Lewis. The university matched Judge Webb’s gift for a total value of $50,000. Judge Webb has indicated that he is very impressed with FSU’s support of the military at all levels (ROTC, active duty, veterans, and family members), thus he wanted to initiate his gift here at FSU.”
According to Fayetteville State University’s website, Webb reported, “I am pleased and honored to establish this scholarship in support of the many men and women who served in this country’s armed forces. This is my way of thanking them for their unselfish service, and it also allows me to pay homage to a childhood friend, Ronald B. Lewis, who served his country with pride and dignity.”
A student, Diyohne Morris, upon hearing the news, stated. “It would be good because it takes a little bit of the financial stress for reservist, and make college a little more accessible to them, same for active duty.”
The scholarship will be named the Ronald B. Lewis scholarship, after Webb’s friend. Students will be eligible if they have a 2.5 minimum GPA, served in a branch of the military, and with no judgment on how they were discharged. Students of any classification and location can apply, and recipients will be selected by a committee who evaluate each application.
