FSU’s Fall Career Fair Was a Hit
posted by Brandon Owens | December 5, 2018 | In Arts and Culture, NewsThe Hiring Event and Diversity Fair (also known simply as the Career Fair) took place on November 8 at the Rudolph Jones Student Center. Hundreds of representatives from various businesses, organizations, and universities came to promote various programs and opportunities for students here at FSU. With the ballrooms and halls of the Student Center housing many booths for the day’s guests, many businesses and organizations arrived to provide information and opportunities for students looking for jobs, internships, experiences, and even on-site interviews.
One particular group that had great internship programs was the Young Adult Program from Cumberland County NC Works. Portia Grady, who is the business service representative of the program, explained that candidates have opportunities to access a large umbrella of different services, such as work experiences opportunities, paid and unpaid apprenticeships, internships, and employability opportunities.
Grady explained that the Young Adult Program “connects young people who might not have any work experience at all with opportunities to gain skills to become employable or to even get employment through our agency. We connect with local businesses who are looking to hire and ask them to take a chance on people who may not have experience on paper but may have skills, or people who may not have the education, but can get there. We bridge the gap between getting our young people the skills they need to get employed.”
With many opportunities for recruitment, several groups expressed their expectations for the people they wish to recruit. During the hiring process, they look for qualities that they feel would make potential candidates fit for their prospective positions.
One such person, Fire Lieutenant Corey Robinson from the Fayetteville Fire Department said that when recruiting, they look for “someone that is motivated to come to work and learn. It’s a rewarding and exciting job for people who want to help others.” Many students have expressed their appreciation for the opportunities that the career fair has provided, not just in terms of career prospects, but for chances to further their education as well, with many of the visitors having information for graduate school programs.
One student looking to go into graduate school was FSU senior Christina Rodriguez, who is an intelligence studies major. She stated that she enjoys the career fair especially since they’ve included graduate schools.
Rodriguez explained: “I have an interest in graduate schools. I’m excited because now I know that what I’m looking to pursue is offered in more places than I originally thought, and it just got me hopeful.”
With many opportunities available literally at one’s fingertips, the Career Fair is a “can’t miss” for students who are serious about their next step in life. Whether it be going to graduate school, or going straight to work after college, if one were to look hard enough, they can find what they are looking for are looking for beyond the doors of FSU.
