FSU’s Fizz Epidemic
posted by Kayla Mady | November 21, 2023 | In NewsFizz is the newest campus app craze. The Fizz app was created by two Stanford students in 2020 to allow a campus community to connect online through an anonymous platform.
Students must sign up with their student emails to be put into their college community. From there, an individual can comment or post under a pseudonym.
This app does well with getting students to interact, but the issue that stands in question is: Is Fizz something positive?
Students and student organizations have raised concerns over this app’s impact on individuals or the community.
The way those concerned see it: this app is now being used to spread rumors, start drama, and or put down others. It has even been a site for posting unsolicited photos of others. Even if one doesn’t necessarily want to read about the drama, Fizz makes it easy to feed in on the harmful content and continue scrolling for ages.
FSU had shut down similar apps, such as Yik Yak, which was the same concept as Fizz. It was the same issue of the app no longer being deemed positive for student interactions, being used inappropriately, and being used to cause student issues.
With examples posted daily now, Fizz is not showing to be the opposite of what the opposers are saying.
The more that the opinions of those against using this platform are backed up, the higher the probability of the school backing out of the authorization of this app.
Students have shown their anger towards the rumors of the possible removal. However, the Fizz experience has yet to be deemed constructive among the community. It shows no signs of having a chance of redemption.
