NFL Free Agency And News Coverage
posted by Trever Lloyd | March 12, 2024 | In SportsIt has been less than a month since the final snap has been played of the NFL’s 2023-2024 season. During this period, we often see a mixture of surprise and expected moves as teams try to revamp their roster, bringing in more talent for a chance to hoist the Lombardi trophy at the end of the year.
Here at The Voice we’re going to take a look at some of the early moves that we have seen during free agency.
First, let’s look at the back-to-back champions as the Kansas City Chiefs have had two major moves in free agency so far. The first is the release of wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling and the decision to franchise tag cornerback L’Jarius Sneed. Valdes-Scantling experienced a rough year with the Chiefs this year to say the least, having a career low in every statistical category. He still had clutch moments during Kanas City’s play offs run. However the lack of production and the emergence of rookie Rashee Rice made him expendable, and he will now be looking for a new home this upcoming fall.
As for Sneed, he played above and beyond expectations going through the regular season without giving up a touchdown solidifying himself as one of the best young corners in the game today. The Chiefs have came out and said that they would love to retain Sneed, but if the two sides cannot reach a long term deal, then look for them to try find a trade partner that not only can give KC appropriate compensation, but also give Sneed the payday he has earned. So for the next couple of days, fans have to play the hurry up and wait game to see how Sneed’s contract negotiations work out.
Other noticeable news has been Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce announcing his retirement. Retirement rumors around Kelce have been swirling since the Eagles wildcard loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. On March 4 Kelce confirmed the rumors were true during a heartfelt and tear-jerking press conference that marks the end of his hall of fame, 13-year career.
More news out of south Florida is that Tampa Bay receiver Mike Evans will not be going anywhere right now. He and the Bucs have agreed to a two-year $52 million contract extension. Evans and his services were going to be highly sought out during this off season. So for Tampa Bay to retain him is huge for the Buccaneers, and may cause them to win the NFC South for the second year in a row.
