Opinion: Are We Really This Distracted?
posted by Victoria Walker | April 2, 2021 | In News, OpinionPresident Joe Biden gave his first formal news conference on March 25, and it was not what many were expecting to hear. The reporters seem distracted by other issues such as immigration and gun laws rather than the more important topic such as COVID-19, a pandemic we have been battling for over a year now.
Biden pledged to have over 200 million vaccines by the end of his first 100 days in office, and I applaud him for that
But is America too distracted? I was more than disappointed to not hear any reporters ask about the pandemic during this press conference.
While I am not saying that immigration laws and our troops are not important topics, I will say they are issues we have been dealing with a very long time, and they can wait to handle them as they have done in the past.
We are at a very vital time in this pandemic, and we cannot afford to be distracted by the things we have been talking about for a year. This is the time for news reporters to be pushing harder about the COVID-19 pandemic.
As many do, I fear with all the distractions, we are going to start ignoring that it still exists and cases are going to begin to spike once again. Everything is just beginning to open back up. I would hate to see us slip back to where we were exactly a year ago.
As many of us are witnessing, many people have returned to normal life before the pandemic, but COVID-19 is still very real and still here, so why was it a subject barely talked about in a president’s first news conference?
America’s goal is to end this pandemic, so why are we so distracted from that goal?
