R. Kelly: Sex, Lies, & Child Support
posted by Law | March 27, 2019 | In Opinion“Guilty as Hell,” said Ed Genson, Kelly’s former lawyer, in response to Robert S. Kelly’s recent allegations. A pretty damning statement from one’s former legal representative. The details of R. Kelly’s indictment and arrest can best be summed up in three words: sex, lies, and child support – $161,000 of it, to be exact!
The R&B singer, self-made porn star and king of bump-n-grind is back in the sights of Black America, Black twitter, Black girls with magic and those that rock. And, this time, Robert, as he is affectionately called by the young girls who grew to “love” him, now faces 10 counts aggravated sexual abuse – 10! That carries the weight of up to 70 years imprisonment. Maybe, there is something wrong with a lil’ bump-n-grind, after all.
I almost felt sorry for captive guests of R. Kelly, until Gayle King gave us a first look at Robert Kelly’s response to a decade and a half of rumor, fact, and alternatives. A composed and collected King faced off with an emotional and erratic R. Kelly. If the word “unbothered” had a face, it would look like Gayle King in that interview. At the early onset of the Surviving R. Kelly docu-series, many were conflicted in their opinion, myself among them, but as the Barnum & Bailey of it all continues, I find this to be the greatest show on Earth.
Do we still care?
Where are the victims in this circus? It’s hard to tell which clowns are laughing or crying. The parents are suspect. I’d have to be dead or utterly lost to psychotic delusion, to sit and whimper, as Mr. Savage has in several interviews. A man turns MY daughter into a sexual crab
cake! And I know who he is and where he lives, its’ going to be some slow-singing and flower-bringing.
As I watched Joycelyn Savage, 23, and Azriel Clary, 21, adamantly argue they are involved in a “loving relationship” with Robert, my convictions began to waiver. Are these the words and emotions of two young women who have freely chosen to love this version of the man? Or, have we just witnessed the powerful effects of Stockholm syndrome, a psychological condition or survival strategy that causes captives to bond with the captor?
Who’s lying and who’s laying whom? Several women in the docuseries classified their interactions with Robert Kelly as a relationship, so where is the crime? At best, it a was an unhealthy relationship and each of them were free to go whenever she pleased. Legally, the age of consent in the state of Illinois is 17, for those women whose journey began when Saved by The Bell was still ringing, the laws of statutory rape are in clear violation and Ole’ Robert should answer to those allegations. Some horrific details will be heard in the court of law as well as in the court of public opinion. Some for the first time, while others will echo the voices heard around America, with our moral compasses pointing due guilty.
The cries for the removal of his work have broken the silence of complicit fans, just as it was done to Bill Cosby and now King of Pop, Michael Jackson. What in the date-night-playlist is going on? Are we so offended that we are willing to remove some of the best music and television of our lifetime, to atone for the crimes of the artist? I’m not. The revolution will not be televised, there will be Jell-O pudding pops, 12 play, and Billie Jean, but it will be live.
