R. Kelly Trial Begins After Years of Accusations
posted by Jadelyn Velasquez | September 20, 2021 | In Arts and CultureThe domestic abuse allegations against Robert Kelly, more commonly known as R. Kelly, are still increasing.
Kelly has been in and out of court since his first criminal trial in 2008 for child pornography. He has faced numerous civil complaints since then.
His second criminal trial started in early August, according to the New York Times. Kelly is being charged with racketeering involving the sexual exploitation and forced labor of children.
The time for R. Kelly’s reckoning has arrived after decades of alleged sexual abuse and misconduct. This new round of legal action was prompted by the 2019 documentary, Surviving R. Kelly.
Kelly’s legal team denied the charges, noting that racketeering laws require the organizing of a criminal enterprise. They told CBS News: “[The] enterprise is based on series of independent relationships and events that the government is trying to patch together.”
A conviction on all charges could result in Kelly serving up to ten years in prison.
