Review: Dragon Ball Super: Broly
posted by Brandon Owens | March 3, 2019 | In Arts and CultureSince 1984, the world has been captivated by the Dragon Ball series. The story follows Goku and his friends throughout the series on their many adventures as they gather the Dragon Balls (the 7 mystical titular items that grants those who collect all of them any wish they desire), and train in martial arts to become stronger to battle a variety of villains that threatened not only the planet Earth but the entire universe as well. The series, which was created by Akira Toriyama, has greatly grown in popularity and has been recognized as one of the best Japanese series of all time. As such, the series has spawned several episodes of anime, video games, manga, and movies.
In November 2018, the world was able to add one more piece to the Dragon Ball masterpiece in the form of a new film titled Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Throughout January 2019 in the United States, the film was shown exclusively in select theaters, such as the Millstone 14 and AMC Fayetteville 14 theaters here in Fayetteville. Fans were ecstatic to be able to watch one of their favorite series on the big screen once again.
The premise of the film is as follows: When Broly (the would-be legendary super Saiyan) was born, his power levels were measured off the charts. Fearing the boy, as his energy readings were higher than his own son’s, King Vegeta decides to send Broly to a distant planet, despite his father’s (Paragus) protests. They end up marooned on the planet Vampa for years. It’s here where Paragas raised his son to be a strong warrior, vowing revenge on King Vegeta, completely unaware of the destruction of their home planet Vageta. Fast forward to present day, Saiyan survivors Goku and Vegeta are having a sparring match when they learn that six of the Dragon Balls were stolen by Frieza (the person responsible for the destruction of planet Vegeta and the near extinction of the Saiyan race). After realizing that the last Dragon Ball is hidden in the Arctic, the heroes make their way up there to quickly retrieve it. Not too long afterwards, Frieza arrives to Earth, and brings along Broly and Paragas (both whom were recruited by Frieza after they were found and rescued from planet Vampa) in order to defeat Goku and Vegeta. Upon their meeting, a massive brawl ensues between the three warriors.
Saying that Dragon Ball Super: Broly is an action-packed film would be an understatement. As the anime is well known for its fight scenes, the film has arguably some on the best in the series. Every punch, kick, and energy blast (including the iconic Kamehameha) caused thunderous rumbles in both the films surrounding and the theater itself. The art style was breathtaking and added to the film. The story was awesome as well, having a great mixture of comedic, serious, and action moments. Dragon Ball Super: Broly is indeed a film that Dragon Ball fans (old and new) can enjoy
