Southern Sounds
posted by Iliana Vega | April 24, 2019 | In Arts and CultureThe Southern Fried Poetry Slam is one of the largest on-going poetry slams in the southeastern region. It’s all about Southern food, tradition, and Southern hospitality.
It started in 1993 and every year during the first week of June a southeastern region hosts the poetry slam. This year, your very own, Fayetteville was chosen to host this year’s poetry slam. It will be hosted by the Arts Council downtown, and it takes place June 5-8.
It will be a four-day long festival that includes workshops, competition, side bouts, and the chance to get to know people from all around. There will be 32 teams and 19 individual slots. There will be 29 total bouts, not including finals. All these activities that will be included are preliminary bouts, turndown cypher, workshops, slam masters slam, haiku deathmatch, hip-hop open mic, nerd slam, queer poetry slam, erotica slam/open mic, indie finals, and team finals.
If you’re looking for something to do this summer, I recommend coming out to the Arts Council. Not only will it be a great chance to meet and listen to poets from around the nation, but it will be a great chance to network for any artists in the area. You can also attend all of the workshops. Make sure to look it up online at southernfriedpoetryslam.com. If you’d like to volunteer for any of the events you can fill out forms online.
Although, the Southern Fried Poetry Slam will be held once this year; The Coffee Scene holds open mic nights every Sunday and Monday for any artists who want to perform beginning at 7 pm.
