Former FSU cornerback Josh Williams and his Chiefs teammates are now a Super Bowl champions, two years removed from losing their last Super Bowl appearance, and three years from their last Super Bowl win.
In the offensive shootout the Philadelphia Eagles gave Kansas City just about all they can handle. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts threw for 301 yards and 1 touchdown through the air and scored 3 rushing touchdowns to go along with 70 yards on the ground.
After trading opening drive touchdowns, a punt by Philly and a missed field goal by KC kicker Harrison Butner, Philadelphia offense started heating up on the first drive of the second quarter. Hurts somehow found wide receiver A.J. Brown in double coverage for a 45-yard touchdown making the score 14-7 Eagles.
The Eagles defense then forced a three and out to give the ball right back to Hurts and the offense who looked to extend the lead. But during the drive misfortune favored the chiefs when Hurts fumbled on a designed quarterback run where it looked like he just lost control of the ball Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton, who recovered the fumbled and took it 36 yards to house tying the score 14-14.
The Eagles however responded with a 15-play drive that ended with a Hurts four-yard rushing touchdown.
After halftime, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense finally got going. On the first drive of the second half, Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco and Patrick Mahomes gashed and slashed the Eagles defense on a 12-play, 75-yard drive that ended with Pacheco punching it in for a one-yard touchdown.
In the third quarter, the Chiefs got their first lead, 28-27 at the start of the fourth quarter.
However the Eagles would not go away. In the fourth quarter, Hurts launched a bomb down the left side of the field to Davonte Smith for 45 yards to put the Eagles down at KC’s 1 yard line. On the next play, Hurts punched the ball in on the next play. Philly completed a two-point conversion to tie the game at 35.
However, Mahomes and the Chiefs would not be denied. Pacheco and Mahomes both ripped off big clutch runs that put Kansas City in position to deliver the final blow.
However the actual dagger came on a 3rd and 8 at the Philadelphia 15 yard line with 1 minute and 54 seconds left, when Philadelphia cornerback James Bradberry was called for defensive holding on Chief’s receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster that gave the Chiefs a new set of downs.
The Chiefs drained the clock to 8 seconds left and kicked a 27-yard field goal.
Hurts and the Eagles got the ball back with four seconds left and attempted a Hail Mary pass, but fell incomplete with no time left on the clock.
The Chiefs are now Super Bowl champions for the second time in 4 years. Mahomes was awarded the Super Bowl MVP with a stat kind of 21-27 passing with 182 yards passing and three touchdowns.
