Whys?
posted by Taquan Watson | October 10, 2023 | In OpinionWalking around campus lately, I’ve been hearing a lot of whys.
“Why does The Grill close at 10 p.m.?” Students feel like that’s too early. The grill has been the chill spot at night for students. It’s a place where fellow students play music, play pool, eat, laugh, and have a good time with each other. Many people believe this generation is stuck on social media or identify with the phrase “social media runs the world,” but we have very few spaces that are away from social media and are physically social, focused on togetherness and fun. Students are not in there abusing the opportunities that have been presented to them, and there hasn’t been any type of violent acts, so why not extend the time where students can be physically social? I mean, it is called the Student Center for a reason, right?
We build unnecessary things like a Starbucks when we have Java City.
Where are the extra parking spots that were mentioned two years ago? Students already have to worry about eating every day, doing their work, and keeping up with campus life, which is a lot to manage. I’ve seen more tire boots and parking tickets than I’ve ever seen before, and these tickets aren’t cheap. If I pay for a student parking pass, I feel like I should be able to park in the cafe or outside my class before 5 p.m. without getting a ticket. North Carolina weather is very unpredictable. You can go to class when it’s 75 degrees and leave class when it’s 90 degrees. Now you have to walk all the way back to your car in this hot weather. This could lead to students just not going at all. This not only affects the person missing class, but it also affects the school as a whole. I feel like college is stressful on its own, and when you factor in the little add-ons. Some students’ efficiency and confidence drop. Why not make it easier for students? Most students are between 18-21 and have never been without their parents. Help them out!
We should have a club that brings students together like a town hall, to explain their stories and get some of the stress off these students’ chest. We are still young, most of us just choosing our majors and deciding what we want to do with our lives. Some of us don’t know how to express our feelings. How can young people express themselves when they aren’t even fully developed yet. Some students feel that they aren’t getting true compassion. If you bring people together, there’s no way anybody could be wrong because everybody has different points of view.
In my opinion, I feel like we should focus on making the students happy more than making the school seem or look nice. If there is something in the works, the university needs to inform the students. Keeping us clueless isn’t doing anything except adding more frustration and questions.
