Winter Fun Without Snow
posted by Brandon Owens | February 26, 2019 | In Arts and CultureFayetteville has definitely missed out on a snowy winter this season. (Although looking at the many winter storms occurring across the country, there are many people who are happy about this, and many more who wish they were in our position right now.) Despite this, there have been ways for the city to enjoy the winter without being blanketed by the cold diamond dust. One organization found a unique way for everyone to do just that.
Cool Spring Downtown District hosted an ice-skating rink in downtown Fayetteville on the weekend of January 25 through 27. The rink was located on Market Square at the intersection of Hay Street and Green Street, in front of the Market House. Here, people were able to come and skate on the makeshift rink that was set up. The event was free, and skates were provided by Cool Spring Downtown District. Various treats were offered to guest as well. The Sweet Palette sold many items such as cupcakes and cookies, and even hot chocolate to help keep warm.
The rink was temporarily made but was well- built for the occasion. It was 42 feet by 50 feet in dimensions. Brenda Alt of Cool Spring Downtown District explained that the rink itself wasn’t made of actual ice, but of several materials that were put together.
“It’s a synthetic material, and it has a lubricant, so it has a slick surface,” said Alt. Alt also explained the reason they hosted the event. “We
support the downtown, and we’re here to bring an economic vitality to downtown, and so that’s our prime purpose.”
Those who attended the event were also able to meet the legendary Snow Queen Elsa (from the movie Frozen). Actress and model Reba Fox (of Sprinkle Pop Play) portrayed the iconic Disney character beautifully. Adorned in a long, blue dress, she skated along with the guest and took photos as well.
“I think it’s wonderful what they’re doing. I think it’s fantastic. I think that everything they do to downtown to get people more involved with the community and make new friends, I think that’s wonderful.
Any way you can spread happiness and cheer, whether it’s doing something like this or inviting a friend over for coffee just to make the season bright is wonderful,” Fox said.
The ice-skating event proved successful. With many visitors, fun was had by all. If you are interested in any event planned by Cool Spring Downtown District, look them up online at downownfayetteville.com.
