A “Plus Ultra” Film Release!
posted by Brandon Owens | November 9, 2018 | In Arts and Culture, OpinionWe all love a good superhero movie. I know I do. We enjoy watching our favorite heroes such as Captain America, Ironman, Spiderman, Batman, and Superman come to life from the comic books onto the big screen. Many films have made fans ecstatic as their favorite heroes are put in the spotlight. Some of these heroes come to us through Japanese media, such as anime and manga, where stories are told through awe-inspiring animation that has the whole world hooked.
To say that the film My Hero Academia: Two Heroes is a wonderous mix of the two would be an understatement. It brought the anime and manga series by Kohei Horikoshi to a whole new level in theatrical form.
Fans of the My Hero Academia series know its basic premise: in a world where 80% of the human population has superpowers (known as “quirks” in the series), this has given rise to the profession of superheroes. The protagonist
Izuku Midoriya, dreams of one day becoming a hero himself, but there’s just one problem, he doesn’t have powers. He eventually meets his idol, the superhero known as All Might, and after proving that he’s worthy, inherits the hero’s powers. He then enrolls at U.A. High School, where he and his classmate train to become the next generation of heroes.
The series has proven popular and became a huge success with audiences all over the world, so it’s only logical that the next step would be to make a movie. The film was released in the U.S. on Sept. 25. There were two showings here in Fayetteville at the AMC Fayetteville 14 & IMAX theater. Those that went to the Sept. 29 show saw the English dub, while those who went the Oct. 2 show watched the original Japanese version (as I did, though I didn’t mind as I’ve seen the movie in both languages, and there were English subtitles as translation).
The film focuses on events that ensue when Izuku and All Might were invited to I-Island, where several scientists live and work to create gadgets and equipment for heroes to utilize during their exploits. Things take a turn for the worst when criminals arrive, take over the island and hold everyone hostage.
Regardless of what language the film was in, fans of the series enjoyed it nonetheless. When I went, the theater was packed with high-energy fans. Whenever someone’s favorite character appeared, or when villains received a well-deserved punch in the face, people cheered loudly. The animation was vivid which made fight scenes exhilarating to watch. There were moments that made us laugh and shudder with anticipation. My Hero Academia: Two Heroes is a film that anyone can enjoy.
Even if you’re not familiar with the My Hero Academia, I’m sure you’ll yell “Plus Ultra” like the rest of us by the end.
