Analysis: FSU Basketball First Home Game Is A Loss
posted by Westley Reaves Jr. | November 22, 2022 | In News, SportsThe first Fayetteville State University home basketball game had a promising start after leading in the first half 30-29. Unfortunately, the second half became a dismal performance in front of the home crowd, as the Broncos began trailing University of North Carolina, Pembroke by double digits. The Broncos ended up losing the game, 68-58.
From the initial jump, the game went back and forth between the teams. It also looked as if both teams were evenly matched in the guard, forward and center positions. However, in the second half Pembroke’s guard, Jajuan Carr, became a problem for the Bronco’s defensive scheme.
On the fast break Carr was excellent at attacking the basket at the right moments and facilitating when necessary. That led to a lot of good fast break points off of turnovers and defensive transitions. Carr led Pembroke with 16 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.
On the Broncos’ side there were two players in double figures for shooting: Cress Worthy led both teams with 18 points, along with having 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. Also, Tyler Foster came off the bench and showed good play getting 11 points and 7 rebounds.
Broncos power forward Sean Tony Hauser showed a promising ability to score in the post by getting 9 points and 8 rebounds. Although his hook shots let him down, missing a lot of easy ones. He tried to make them go straight in the hoop, which is completely unnecessary. He is tall enough to bank it in every time, right off the backboard.
Hauser could be more efficient in the paint if he went off the play style of Hall-of-Famer Tim Duncan, who relied on fundamental bank shots. This ultimately helped him become a 5-time champion.
Another problem for the Broncos was the poor passing during most of the game. They started with good passing schemes, but quickly backed to isolation ball and very few pick and roll plays. This hurt tremendously because it led to low percentage shots and turnovers that resulted in points for Pembroke.
Both starting guards need to be able to facilitate for their teammates. Worthy only had 1 assist. Also, the starting point guard Marcus Elliott had no assists at all, which, as his main responsibility, is not good.
All in all, poor display for the Broncos’ first game at home court. Their next game was also not successful in Atlanta, Georgia versus Tuskegee University on November 18, losing 40-43.
