Basketball in the Bubble
posted by Antonio Mitchell | August 28, 2020 | In SportsDue to the COVID-19, the NBA suspended their season, and the NBA as well as the WNBA decided to play out their seasons in a bubble, meaning the players, coaches, and NBA personnel stay contained within the same space with regular testing. With the NBA finishing their season with scrimmage games and then finally seeding games for the playoffs, and the WNBA starting their season in the bubble, we get to see teams play without fans and how well teams are without them.
There is no such thing as home court advantage so teams will not be able to have the fans to support them while they play. Home court advantage can be a huge factor in how the opposing team will play especially if the crowd is enthusiastic and loud. It could be very hard for opposing teams to hear plays being called and coaches talking to their teams trying to draw up plays during timeouts.
During this time there were players that didn’t want to join because there was a possibility of endangering their families as well as all the social movements that were protesting in the world. Just in the past week, led by several Milwaukee Bucks’ players, NBA players stopped play in protest of the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisc, according to The New York Times. Their protest led to a stoppage of play in baseball and hockey, as well.
With the COVID-19 spreading and causing more and more cases, the entire sports world came to halt and was shut down. With the bubble model, we could continue to see the sports we love. If it works.
