The CIAA Basketball Tournament 2023 Review

The women’s team lost their very first game against Johnson C. Smith University in a game that was a huge upset for the Broncos as they were the 1st seed losing to the 8th seed in the conference.
Even though the Broncos held Johnson C. Smith to just 8 percent from the 3-point line. They struggled through the first half but kept it within 1 point by halftime 30 to 29.
After the half, Fayetteville State caught fire, taking a 6-point lead after being down one at the half. But Johnson C. Smith took back the lead and led by 1, 45 to 44, going in the fourth quarter. Then the Broncos went on another run, taking a 52 to 45 lead.
But Johnson C. Smith prevailed and took control of the rest of the game never letting the Broncos back in, going 17 to 2 and finishing the game 62 to 54. Fayetteville State was eliminated in their first game of the tournament.
For the men’s team, they had a decent, but struggling, first game. Their first opponents were Shaw University. At first, the Broncos struggled falling 10 to 15.
Then, as it was throughout the game, the Broncos went on a mini run and tied up the game to 15. After, Shaw took the lead by a single point by the end of the first half.
In the second half, the Broncos took control and took at 2-point lead, and then went on a run that saw them grow to an 8-point lead. Then from there, the Broncos held and won the game 58 to 53, going on to the final 4 against Lincoln University.
In the quarterfinal game, the Broncos struggled with turnovers and missed shots, but good scoring runs and forcing turnovers had the Broncos staying in most of the game. In the last seven minutes of the game, Fayetteville State took the lead after a 5-0 run had them up by 1.
But Lincoln took control and took the lead and never looked back. Broncos struggled at the free throw line and that ultimately lead to the opposition taking advantage. The Broncos then lost the game 53 to 49, eliminating them from the tournament and sending Shaw to the final.
