Breast Cancer Awareness Month
posted by Cheyenne Kennedy | October 23, 2023 | In Arts and CultureBreast Cancer Awareness Month is during the month of October, to spread awareness about breast cancer, mammograms to help diagnosis, and treatments. People wear pink, or pink ribbons to show support during this time.
Understanding that breast cancer is prevalent in higher amounts than other cancers is important to the study and learning of the disease, and possibly finding a better treatment.
Because it affects many women, it also affects children and family. There are forms of breast cancer, as with many others, that are hereditary- meaning the disease can be passed down to the children. Children can be carriers of the disease, in which the cancer is not active for them, or they can have it as an active cancer. Breast cancer can thus affect many generations of the same family.
Breast cancer can be a tumor of malignant cells that have accelerated growth in population. There are various types of cancer, and they affect many people around the world.
The National Breast Cancer Foundation states: “1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.”
It mostly affects women, especially over the age of 45, but it can also be found in men. Thus, many people have breast cancer or know someone who is suffering from its effects. Early detection and treatment are key to having a higher survival rate, making it ever so important to do tests/screenings.
There are many ways to help, whether it is donating money or time, spreading the word (in-person or social media), or getting a mammogram to catch the cancer in its earlier stages.
Breast cancer is an ever-present problem. However, there is hope for those that have breast cancer, especially when they realize they are not alone and have a support system.
