Since early October, the Broncos have been on a stampede featuring a five-game winning streak both at home, in Capel Arena, and away. Broncos have only fallen to Shaw University, Mount Olive College and Winston Salem State University once.
The last two games were very pivotal in the Broncos’ journey to the CIAA championship. Thursday, Nov. 1, they traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina and defeated Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls in a 3-1 matchup. Back in Capel Arena, where they met for the first time in the 2018 season, the Broncos ended the Bulls’ five-game winning streak.
The Broncos also upset the leader in the conference, Shaw University, in a home win on Oct. 29. Then the following Sunday afternoon on Nov. 4, Broncos also upset the number 2 seed, Winston Salem State University in a 3-0 sweep on their home court.
Leading the effort for the Broncos this season are both seasoned players and outstanding newcomers. Freshmen Diamond Holmes (Rookie of the Week) and Jessica Williams combined for 19 attacks. Team veterans, seniors Bojo Jada and Teeya McLean made plays at the net; Jada contributed five kills and one block, McLean added nine kills, three aces, and two blocks.
In a post game interview against Shaw University, Head Coach Rasheemah Johnson explained that their goal as a team was to enter conference play at number 2. She praised her team on their ability to adjust and play together. Although the team has faced a lot of adversity in the season, they are really beginning to gel together in the thick of the season that matters most.
