Candidacy Recieves Blacklash NC DMV Makes It Easier To Change Gender on IDs
posted by Dominque Elliott | March 2, 2019 | In NewsThe North Carolina’s Department of Vehicles is making it easier for state residents to change their gender on their driver’s license or ID card by introducing a new form.
According to the News & Observer, “The form replaces the requirement for a court order or a letter from a physician confirming that gender had been changed through surgery. The DMV has dropped the surgery requirement and allows a broader range of licensed health care providers to confirm a person’s gender identity, including physicians, psychiatrists, physician’s assistants, therapists, counselors, psychologists or case or social workers.” The News & Observer also reported: “The brand new ‘sex designation form’ allows a licensed health care or social services worker attest to the applicant’s gender identity.”
Some students have expressed some rather positive opinions on the issue.
“It’s good because people can put the gender they identify as on their license,” Staisha Cain, political science major, commented when she heard the news. “I don’t see how it could do any damage.”
“I feel as though it is a benefit for people to be accepted for who they truly are on the inside and out. It’s one of the hardest things for a trans-man or -woman to be stuck in the shell of life that is not who they know themselves to be.“ student Shelton Davis expressed. “This gives the opportunity for them to change their names a lot easier, with less hassle, but it should also be looked at with precaution for people who are identity frauds.”
This new form or addition to the DMV is a big step for North Carolinians that are gender fluid, transgender, and/or don’t adhere to a gender binary. It’s a step, and hopefully a new start, towards North Carolina being more open and inclusive of its diverse, and often marginalized populations.
