Celebrating the Life of Kirshnik Khari Bell: A Look Back at Takeoff’s Career
posted by Raquel Bailey | November 23, 2022 | In Arts and CultureKirshnik Khari Ball, famously known by his rap name Takeoff, was a member of the hip-hop group Migos. The family trio started their group back in 2008, with Takeoff alongside the cousin and uncle with whom he grew up. The group is best known for their chart-topping hits including songs such as “Bad & Boujee” and “Versace.”
Takeoff was killed on November 1, in Houston, Texas. As we celebrate the life of Takeoff, we see just how much the music group Migos influenced modern hip-hop culture.
The group’s first major hit included the song “Versace,” which was later remixed by Drake back in 2013. They followed this by dropping popular singles such as “Fight Night” and “Look At My Dab.”
Their 2017 album Culture was by far the group’s most successful album. The album charted #1 on the 2017 Billboard chart, debuting singles “Slippery” and “T-Shirt.” The album also received platinum certification in July 2017.
In early 2022, Migos split up as Offset left the trio.
Despite being known as the “quiet” Migo, Takeoff had his own solo career. His solo career included singles such as “Last Memory,” “Hotel Lobby,” and “Party.” He dropped a solo record, The Last Rocket, just months before his death. He also released an album with his uncle Quavo, Only Built for Infinity Links, in October of this year.
Migos helped define the modern hip-hop era. Characteristic of the “Drip Era,” Migos helped connect hip-hop and high fashion by reawakening the relevance of brands such as Versace in the Black community. Takeoff had a special delivery and flow when it came to performing.
His death adds to the gun violence that has been hurting the hip-hop community recently. Artists PnB Rock, Young Dolph, Mo3 and others have all been tragically shot within the past two years.
Creating a legacy in both the hip-hop and fashion community, Takeoff will forever be a name not long forgotten.
