posted by Nicholas Robinson-Carter | November 21, 2023 | In Arts and CultureOn November 15, Fayetteville State University’s Brothers of the Delta Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. held the Miss Omega Psi Phi pageant.
The event was held in Seabrook Auditorium, and the show started at 7:11p.m. The theme for the pageant was “Barbie.”
Running for Miss OPP were Keturah Haynes, Mia Thompson, Azinay Rivas, Christina Moses, Cherise Murchison, Kihyira Jones, Sasha Thompson, Addenita Koonce and Jamyah Jones.
Dressed in purple, the colors of the fraternity, and black heels, all the contestants started the pageant off with an introduction followed by an exquisite dance number to the 1997 song “Barbie Girl” by Aqua.
Afterward, each lady was dressed in business professional attire for the onstage interview portion of the contest hosted by chapter brother Nate Stevenson.
The pageant continued with the swim wear category. This was where each of the nine ladies showed off their personalities and pose with the latest fashions.
The next portion of the contest was talent, and the nine contestants had three minutes to perform. Haynes did a special solo dance to Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing.” Mia Thompson did a fabulous speed drawing of Whitney Houston, while Houston’s 1987 hit “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” played in the background. Rivas put on a lovely performance of salsa dancing. Moses worked the crowd with a show-stopping performance of doing a majorette dance to speed mashup between Choppa Style and Dru Hill. Murchison sang and performed a spoken word to “Luna” by Iniko. Kihyira Jones dazzled the crowd with her spoken word on Black women empowerment. Sasha Thompson did a freestyle. Koonce sung a rendition to “If You Love Me” by Brownstones. Jamyah Jones blew the audience away with her spectacular science experiment.
At the end the night, evening wear was final portion of the contest. Each of these elegant ladies walked across the stage as a short bio was read, including information on their plans after graduating from FSU. The dress colors ranged from bright yellow to Navy blue to burgundy.
Winners were then announced: Haynes received an award for Miss Congeniality, Mia Thompson received Beauty of Perseverance, and Your People’s Choice was Sasha Thompson.
After an eager anticipation from the audience, it’s now time to announce the winners:
- Miss Purple & Gold was Christina Moses
- Jamyah Jones won Miss Delta Gamma
- Your 2023 Miss Omega Psi Phi goes to Mia Thompson
Congratulations to all gorgeous ladies for their hard work and participation in the pageant.
