Do You Feel Safe on Campus?
posted by Dominque Elliott | October 9, 2019 | In NewsOn September 16, a former student was shot near Seabrook Auditorium on Fayetteville State University’s campus. The administration sent out emails, phone calls and even text messages to students and parents warning them about the events and to seek shelter.
Since then, the issue of safety has been a hot topic on FSU’s campus. The Interim Chancellor even hosted a webinar discussing campus safety to address the issue.
As a student on campus, I have seen visible measures being implemented to increase safety and security throughout the nights. For instance, we now see more visible police and security officers present by in the streets or making rounds on campus.
But how do students feel about these campus safety measures, and how these measures affect the safety at school? Do these security measures make people feel safe?
“I personally don’t think it’s changed,” student Ashton Brice stated. “Not at all,” psychology major Karin Bass agreed. “Last week there [were] … gunshots on Ramsey, but all we got were emails about suspicious activity.”
“Just because there is a police car outside doesn’t necessarily mean we are safe,” Brice noted.
Tyree Wheeler, a visual design major, said: “I think the campus tries its best to maintain safety, but campus police could be better.”
Other students, like visual design major Bristol McLean, discussed what changes could be made in order to make campus feel more safe and secure. “I think the campus should be more enclosed and exclusive. We need gates that block random people from getting in. That’s our major issue at hand.”
Michael Rose, chemistry major, felt like safety was more of an issue off campus. “Overall, I’m not concerned unless I’m walking down Murchison.”
