Everyone Deserves To Be Called By the Right Pronouns
posted by Kayla Mady | April 3, 2023 | In OpinionPronoun identification and clarification has been an important development in our society. Though many are still unaware of the topic, many are still learning and attempting to understand. However, in major news lately, I have seen the lack of respect towards the use of correct pronouns.
The most recent incident is with the Nashville shooting. The shooter, Audrey Hale, goes by he/him pronouns. In fact, on social media, Hale referred to himself as Aiden, NOT Audrey.
I agree; the shooting was horrendous and incredibly tragic. No one should have ever lost their lives. However, I don’t believe the lack of correct pronouns and using his dead name is the right way to go.
Picking and choosing whose pronouns get respected defeats the entire purpose of being able to determine the identification with which you as a person feel most comfortable.
These major news stations still have a lot of work to do regarding their research. I recently read an article on this tragedy in which the station stated they knew Hale preferred he/him, and had been using he/him for quite some time, but used she/her right after that.
It’s unclear whether they do not understand how to use pronouns or the gender someone clearly has announced for themselves. But I hope they begin to fix this issue because this is not the first time, I have seen news outlets forwardly ignore pronouns that someone had been using or names that people prefer for themselves since before any article was ever written about them.
If we want the rest of society to wrap their heads around the new pronouns, and/or newly assigned genders, then the news we consume has got to change and learn how to respect the facts.
