FSU Audience Descends into Hell with FSU Theatre’s “Doctor Faustus”

The play occurred November 17-19 in the Butler Theater. With November 19 being the last night of the play, audience stemming from FSU students, visiting students, and the FSU community gathered together to watch the play take them on a spirit-jumping journey.
Dr. Joanne Faustus was played by Harmony Hill along with Alyna Carlton as Mephistopheles, Oniya Turner as the bride, Joyrecia Miller as Covetousness, Yazmyne Laster as Envy, Ajanell Maultsby as Pride, Crysten Bethea as Lechery, Aaliyah Butler as Evil Angel, Adrian Knight as Wagner, Joshua Barrett as Cornelius, Alyssa Randlett as the clown, Michaiah Moore as Valdes, and James Chris Kelley as the Good Angel.
Except for Faustus, Mephistopheles, and Wagner, most of the cast takes on various roles in the play such as Barrett playing Lucifer, Miller as the Duchess, Randlett as Robin, Butler as Helen, Moore as the Duke, and Kelley as the Emperor, and the creative process being directed by Dr. Jeremy Fiebig
Dr. Fiebig opened the play with an ominous announcement: “We are descending into Hell.”
Doctor Faustus (Hill) decides to do magic and Valdes (Moore) and Cornelius (Barrett) teach her to do it. After learning from Valdes and Cornelius, Faustus decides to call on spirits and summon a devil named Mephistopheles (Carlton) who tells her that she is a servant to Lucifer, and, after asking about hell and the devils, Faustus decides to give her soul to Lucifer for power and knowledge.
Throughout the play, Faustus battled with regretting the deal and enjoying the riches and distractions that Mephistopheles summoned for her..
The play received a warm standing ovation from the crowd as the crowd, entertaining and spooking the audience all at once.
“I saw my school do this a couple weeks ago, and this one was better,” audience member Christiana Taylor, a visiting student from Virginia Commonwealth University stated.
“I thought it was hilarious,” freshman Ashley Bell said.
“I just really loved it. I loved it all,” freshman Victoria Poe stated.
Doctor Faustus cast members Butler and Kelley called the process of bringing the pale to the stage as long, but they enjoyed every minute of it.
“Process long, people great, the cast was the one that made it come to life” Butler stated.
“The process was kind of short and long,” Kelley said. “I didn’t know how I was going to do because of the language and how old it was, but other than that I really enjoyed it.”
