FSU Broncos football season concludes with CIAA Championship loss against Bowie State
posted by Ty Hamer-Yelverton | November 23, 2021 | In News, SportsThe CIAA Championship football matchup happened again in Salem, VA with the Fayetteville State University Broncos versus the Bowie State University Bulldogs. FSU Broncos lost the game 7-17.
The contest between the two teams was closer this time than in 2018 (30-10) and in 2019 (23-7), as the Broncos failed to seal the deal with a win. This year makes it the fourth consecutive appearance for the Broncos at the CIAA Championship.
In the first quarter, Jerome Bentley, a strong safety, pulled down an interception as the Broncos trailed the Bulldogs 0-7. As the first half concluded, though the Broncos were behind 0-14, the defensive force was on point as the Broncos made the Bulldogs turnover as the half ended.
There was an impressive performance from Avery McCall, a redshirt junior who was quarterback during the second quarter. McCall’s ball-play shifted the momentum of the game for the Broncos going into the half.
As the second half began, the Broncos are on the scoreboard with complete pass from K’Hari Lane, quarterback, to Branxton Knotts, wide receiver.
As the football game came to an end, the FSU Broncos defense was led by the Food Lion Runner-up Game MVP Keyshawn James, a defensive end. James was also the CIAA Defensive Player of the Year. However, the BSU offense’s performance was enough to grant the Bulldogs with their third consecutive conference title at the end of the game.
