FSU Cross-Country: Dedicated, Motivated & Fierce!
posted by Wil Brown | October 3, 2018 | In News, SportsThe cross-country teams of Fayetteville State University have survived the storm, and they are poised to become champions this season. After claiming the CIAA championship during last season, our runners from the women’s team are extremely focused on the ultimate prize this season. The CIAA Championships will be hosted on October 25. Although the men’s team has not won a championship, both of our cross-country teams at FSU are determined to make a serious effort to contend for a CIAA cross-country championship title during this season’s competition.
FSU cross-country will be competing against all of our rivals within the CIAA conference. Our women’s cross-country team will most likely encounter the fiercest competition from our challengers at Winston-Salem State University and St. Augustine’s University. For the men’s team, Virginia Union University and Virginia State University have both demonstrated that they are determined to defeat us and claim dominion over the highly coveted CIAA cross-country championship. In fact, the runners at Virginia Union are proven champions who have won three of the last four CIAA men’s cross-country championships. However, the men’s roster includes new additions who are very talented and dedicated to success. One of those new additions includes a disciplined athlete, Charles Pumbu. He’s a strong runner who is starting to catch the attention of many CIAA cross-country spectators. When asked what the secret was to his success, he replied, “I stay focused and work hard to achieve my goals.”
On the women’s roster, FSU has a very talented athlete by the name of Aleena Cruz. She was a phenomenal runner last season and has shown significant signs of growth as an athlete this season. Cruz had a magnificent performance during the Monarch Cross Country Classic on September 8. With a total logged time of 28:51.97, she was the first runner to complete the race for the women’s cross-country team.
In addition to Cruz, Coach Inez Turner has recognized Nelly Kandie as a significant contributor to the team’s success. Coach Turner said, “Nelly Kandie is definitely going to be an amazing athlete who will take this team to the next level.”
As champions, the women’s team is committed to success and they will remain to be fierce competitors within the CIAA conference.
